Jesus, Taker of Souls

Jesus, you are the taker of souls,
you are the secret thief of souls.
Under cover of night you steal your daughter
from pirates who curse and strike the air.

Jesus, you are the divine piper;
the dead who hear your voice, O Son of God,
leap to their feet and run after you,
leaving their winding-sheets in the road.

Jesus, you are the all-loved man;
masked in darkness, you stand over a death-bed
drawing a soul out from her lifelong home.
Though she is terrified she surrenders to joy.

Jesus, you are the taker of souls;
every soul who hears your name
immediately tries to give away her life
so she can be free to join your Great Company.

Jesus, you are the Word who calls to souls;
a shock went through the body human
and all men in their souls looked wildly
for the light that shined on them.

Jesus, you are the all-loved man;
every soul who thinks she runs from you
leaps into your arms, and she who chases you,
if she tries to hold a bundle, drops it in the path.
