Hi, Everyone
Posted in Miscellaneous on June 15, 2009 | 4 Comments »
We are in the throes of house-buying, and that is the main reason why I have neglected this poor blog and all my blog friends of late. Apologies, and I’ll see you on the other side!
Quiet In the Evening, and a Memory of Field Corn

The night in its darkness communicates with my darkened room by way of french doors, through which pass cool air and a singular evening scent. It makes me think of adventures. I’ve just spent a long time playing with Scottie and Johnnie on our bed – it’s really as much the family trampoline as much [...]
Movie vs. Stageplay

What’s the difference between the two forms?
In movies, directors and producers are allowed to change the script, sometimes drastically. They can even put out multiple versions of the same movie. What they are crafting as artistans is the final experience of watching the movie. The writer of the screenplay works within this overall purpose. His [...]

I’m trying to get back in the habit of writing every day but I feel that I have less to say than ever before.
My days are busier now. My husband rises at 7:00 and naturally, so do I. He used to get up at 8:00 but in the landscaping business summer is busier and the [...]
Four Lines and a Mystery

Lying on the westward side,
Frozen and steely
Listening to our leader
Till rage and unreason seem divine
I can’t recall the first four lines. I composed them all swift as thought in that space between waking and sleeping, this morning. I’ve already noticed that my mind is more fertile during that time, and that spiritual perception is heightened.
It makes [...]

The image above would perhaps be more appropriate at the end of this letter, dear readers. But I always find it so cheering to open my blog and see an image on the front page, so there it is. I will now address you on the subject of The Flute.

Good News
Posted in Miscellaneous on December 21, 2008 | 8 Comments »
My fellow Orthodox Christians will take joy in this news: yesterday my husband and son and I were baptized and chrismated into the Holy Orthodox Church, and today we took our first communion and celebrated the betrothal service. So now we are bound together by a way of being that transcends time and space and [...]

If anyone I know a bit from blogworld wants to be my facebook friend, This Link should lead to my public listing.
I was sitting around a table with a few other people – our dear Father G and a Catholic lady from St. Hubert’s and a couple of ladies from our church – and we were [...]

Here’s a fascinating blog. I don’t think I’ll put it in my blogroll as I am very choosy about what appears there… My criteria has little to do with level of ‘liking’ by the way, so don’t anyone be offended. I only put things in my blogroll that I think are an appreciable influence on me at the time.
Anyway, enjoy; [...]
Link: A Short Story by Susanna Clarke
Posted in Miscellaneous on August 27, 2008 | 3 Comments »
I sometimes wonder if it’s any use for anyone other than Susanna Clarke to write stories. At the very least, it seems, one should have an English education. And be very, very hardworking. And have a powerful imaginative grasp of the things one loves.
Ahee for those of us who are inwardly impelled to do things we [...]
The Length of the Bike Path; A Runner’s Evening

Where we live between the lake and the river, insects behave in a peculiar manner this time of year.
It began last night. Some twenty feet in the air, between two electrical lines, I saw what seemed a puff of dark smoke about to dissipate and waft away. It shimmered slightly – changed shape – changed [...]

Conversation in car last night:
Me: What do you think Medvedev is up to?
Scottie: It’s not him, it’s Putin.
Well, that’s what everyone assumes. But they weren’t doing this stuff while Putin was in charge. How do we know that Medvedev didn’t get in office [...]
New Video – Emily Boden Sings “My Love Was Wondering”
Posted in Miscellaneous on August 12, 2008 | 2 Comments »
Ironically, my Truly Dreadful post is now followed by a video of a different kind. A number of weeks ago I promised to post the tune for my “Folk Poem II: My Love Was Wondering.” Unfortunately I’ve had a lot of trouble with Finale Showcase. This past week or more I’ve been sojourning in WI [...]
Waiting for My Baby to Fall Asleep

Note: for tips on getting babies to sleep click here.
Baby is in bed but not sleeping. I feel what I always feel at this time of day – that if I don’t get at least 45 minutes sleep I will go insane. And it’s true a little, but only a little. Stayed up too late [...]

What music would you listen to while reading The Lord of the Rings? I choose Tchaikovsky’s Cappricio Italian (sample at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a3GmV_DaLs )
This music expresses war, and the feeling of goodness and greatness – even merriness – lost.
Of course Wagner’s Ring cycle is also effective.

A Former Protestant Tries to Explain Sacraments

This post has a strange history: it got a lot of attention when I first put it up, but after continuing to learn about the Christian faith I felt that my explanation was inadequate and perhaps even slightly inaccurate, and I wanted to erase it. However, instead of deleting the post as I often do [...]
